Food Forest
Probably the project closest to my heart, and my favorite to collaborate on with my clients, is the creation of food forests.
Back in the 70s, Costa Rica faced mass deforestation projects for cattle farming, mostly for fast-food corporations in the States. While I do believe in animal husbandry and grass-fed cattle farming, the large-scale industry has questionable ethics, to say the least, and is one of the major causes of deforestation worldwide.
Costa Rica did launch many incentivie schemes thereafter to try to correct the damage caused, which did lead to a good deal of reforestation. However, there is still a lot of work to do.
Turning old cattle land into food forests is a great way to regenerate downtrodden land, create an abundant source of food, and create more real estate value for a property in the long run. Having food sovereignty is becoming increasingly on everyone’s mind, as we have seen governments waging war on farmers, billionaires buying farm land and leaving it idle; all of this sends a signal that our food supply and global supply chains are in jeopardy.
The Ultimate Insurance Policy
That’s why I call food forest projects the ultimate insurance policy. 2020 showed us that we are not in good hands with global politicians running the planet, and they definitely do not have our interests as their priority perhaps quite the opposite.
We all need a sanctuary we can retreat to in time of need, but it can also serve as a great family destination place, as well as educate friends and family about food and sustainability: a place to connect to the Earth, and focus on health and wellness.
The idea is simple and can be done from small scale to huge. Plant as many fruit trees as space allows, with as many diverse varieties as you desire. Plant root vegetable gardens of easy-to-grow local vegetables, and assign a caretaker to look after it and maintain it in your absence. It will always be waiting for you, and you can pass it on to your family. You can expand production capacity and add animals for meat production as well. Sky is the limit.
